The following is intended to provide
a general source of information about the Village. For specific information use the appropriate
phone number. If no number is listed,
call the Village Hall at 746-2193.
Telephone coverage is provided from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Saturdays,
Sundays and Holidays. The Village covers
an area of 383 acres and has a population of about 7,500 people. Along its two business streets, Hillside and
Willis Avenues are located almost 300 stores, professional offices and other
enterprises.
ORGANIZATION
Elected
officials are a Mayor, a Village Justice and a four member Board of
Trustees. The Board of Trustees holds a
public meeting at 8:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. At such meetings residents have an
opportunity to ask questions and express opinions without the need for prior
arrangements. Through the Village
government residents enjoy such essentials as refuse collection, residential
street maintenance, water supply, fire protection, building codes and land use,
a village court, a free public library and a swimming pool.
TRANSPORTATION
Train
service to New York City and Brooklyn is provided via the Oyster Bay Branch of
the LIRR. Running time is approximately
forty-five minutes. Commuter parking
adjacent to the railroad station is available at a nominal fee for an annual
permit. Applications for a permit are
available at the Village Hall. Bus
service is available to independent subway in Jamaica, to Mineola and the
Roosevelt Field Shopping Center.

Although
the Village enacts its own ordinances and parking regulations, law enforcement
in general is handled by the Third Precinct of the Nassau County Police
Department.
VILLAGE COURT

Summonses
for violations of Village ordinances are returnable in the Village Court which
is in session on the first Wednesday of each month. Trials are scheduled on the last Wednesday of
the month. The Village Court is located
in the Village Hall.
PARKING
To
encourage more equitable use of curbside parking, time limits have been placed
on most streets adjacent to the business areas.
Free shoppers’ parking lots are provided at five locations in the
business areas. During a snow emergency,
all vehicles must be
removed
from the streets when snow measures 2” or more and must remain off the streets
for 18 hours. Parking permits are
available at Village Hall. These are
issued on a calendar year and entitle permit holder to park in any Village lot.

Located
at the street level entrance of the Village Hall at Meagher Place near the
corner of Willis Avenue, it is open to all residents of the Village. It stocks over 30,000 books, presents story
hours and films for children and cultural exhibits and programs for all age
groups. Videos are also available.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT

avoid unnecessary problems.
FIRE PROTECTION

A
volunteer Fire Department of approximately 100 men answers the call of the
Village sirens and home alert alarms twenty-four hours a day, seven days a
week. Fire fighting equipment consists
of two pumpers, a ladder truck, a flood-light truck and an emergency service
vehicle. All trucks are radio equipped.
AMBULANCE UNIT

Specially
trained members of the Fire Department operate two Village ambulances, each
equipped with a cardiac care unit.
Requests for an ambulance in emergency cases should be made by dialing
742-3300.
WATER SUPPLY
Water
is pumped from three deep wells and stored in two tanks with a total capacity
of two million gallons. In case of power
failure, standby diesel generators assure the Village of an uninterrupted water
supply. A semi-annual user charge keeps
the entire operation self-supporting. Water
Bills are rendered at six (6) month intervals; payable within 30 days (without
penalty.)
SANITATION
Garbage,
in covered cans or large plastic bags that are securely tied, is collected from
curbside twice weekly. In the area west
of Willis Avenue this is done on Monday and Thursday mornings; east of Willis
Avenue, the pickups are on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Heavy refuse such as refrigerators, stoves,
furniture, grass clippings tree and bush trimmings are collected on Wednesdays
only throughout the entire Village.
Newspapers are collected every Thursday.
Recyclables are collected every Tuesday
(west
of Willis including Willis) and every Wednesday (east of Willis including
Willis.)
HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
Village
sweepers are scheduled to clean the streets on garbage collection days after
garbage pickups have been made.
Installation and maintenance of traffic signs, street name signs,
painting of traffic lines along village streets, sanding operation during
winter months and cleanup after sever storms are some of its other important
functions.
SWIMMING POOL

An
Olympic size (25 meter) swimming pool with a separate kiddy pool and related
facilities are available on a subscription basis. The cost of a membership for the season
entitles members to various events.
